The All Progressives Congress (APC) has condemned the impeachment proceedings initiated against Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, and his deputy, describing the move as a dangerous political manoeuvre capable of destabilising the state.
In a statement, the party’s Rivers State chapter faulted members of the State House of Assembly for pushing what it termed a “legislative coup d’état,” warning that the action could plunge the state into unnecessary political turmoil. The APC argued that the impeachment process lacks justification and undermines democratic principles.
The party accused some lawmakers of pursuing personal and political interests rather than acting in the best interest of Rivers people. It also expressed concern that the development could negatively affect governance and disrupt peace in the state.
The Rivers State House of Assembly had commenced impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara and Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu over allegations of gross misconduct, and had taken steps to activate constitutional processes to probe the claims.
However, the move has further heightened political tension in the state, with divisions emerging within the Assembly and across party lines. While some lawmakers insist on continuing the process, others have called for restraint and dialogue.
The APC appealed for calm and urged all parties involved to embrace constitutional order and political maturity, stressing that stability and effective governance should take precedence over political rivalry in Rivers State.
