Foreign airline operators in Nigeria have called for urgent action to tackle persistent challenges in the country’s aviation sector, warning that current bottlenecks are slowing international flight operations.

Speaking at a recent industry gathering, the chairman of the International Airlines Operators Committee highlighted several issues affecting operations, including high operating costs, weak airport infrastructure, inconsistent government policies, and foreign exchange difficulties.

Industry leaders described Nigeria as a strategically important aviation market with strong potential, but stressed that progress will require significant improvements in facilities such as runways, terminals, and navigational systems, alongside clearer, more predictable regulations.

They also acknowledged government efforts at modernising airports and reforming the sector but urged sustained engagement with stakeholders to ensure reforms keep pace with global aviation standards and support long-term growth.

The airlines said that a cooperative approach between government agencies and international carriers could help unlock Nigeria’s full potential as a hub for regional and global air traffic.
