Two journalists based in Suleja, Niger State, have been arrested by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force following the publication of a report alleging that the chairman of the Suleja Local Government Area used a forged school certificate.

The journalists were taken into custody shortly after the report was published. They were initially arrested in Suleja before being transferred to the Force Intelligence Department in Abuja, where they are currently being held.

The arrests have sparked concerns within media circles, with critics describing the action as an attempt to intimidate journalists and suppress investigative reporting. Observers warn that such actions could undermine press freedom and discourage journalists from reporting on issues of public interest.

The report in question focused on allegations surrounding the educational qualifications of a serving local government chairman, a matter that had generated public debate in the area.

As of the time of reporting, the police had not issued an official statement explaining the grounds for the arrests.
