TUC and NLC Threaten Nationwide Action, Give Government 14 Days to Pay Health Workers

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) have issued a 14‑day ultimatum to the federal government to resolve delays in paying and adjusting the salaries of health workers under the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS). The unions warned that failure to act could lead to nationwide industrial action, including strikes and protests.

In a joint statement, the unions described the delay in implementing the CONHESS adjustment — first recommended by a technical committee in 2021 — as unfair to health workers who continue to serve under challenging conditions. They noted that while other pay scales, such as those for medical personnel, were updated promptly, the CONHESS review remains unaddressed.

The unions said the deadline starts from January 23, 2026, and directed all state councils and affiliates to prepare for possible nationwide mobilization, including work stoppages, picketing, and service withdrawals, if the government does not comply.

This move reflects growing tension between organised labour and the government over wage justice and the treatment of essential health workers.
