Health Workers Blame Government for Deepening Nigeria’s Healthcare Crisis Amid Ongoing Strike

The ongoing strike by health workers across Nigeria continues to disrupt medical services, with the Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU) blaming the federal government for the stalemate. The union says the government’s failure to implement agreed salary reforms under the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) is the main cause of the crisis.

According to JOHESU, the protracted strike has forced citizens to bear the brunt of inadequate healthcare, as hospitals struggle to provide essential services. The union insists that health workers should not be held accountable for the situation, calling on the government to act swiftly.

The strike, which began in November 2025, has reportedly worsened patient care in public hospitals, with some facilities operating at minimal capacity. JOHESU has urged citizens and civil society groups to pressure the government into resolving the dispute, warning that delays could lead to further deterioration of the nation’s healthcare system.

While the government says it is reviewing the salary structure and engaging in talks with the union, JOHESU maintains that meaningful action must be taken immediately to end the strike and restore normal healthcare services.
