Lawmakers Advocate Special Housing Programme for Military Veterans and Families

Members of Nigeria’s House of Representatives have proposed a dedicated housing scheme to support retired military personnel and the families of officers who died in service. The initiative aims to provide safe and affordable homes for veterans and address the challenges they face after leaving active duty.

The lawmakers highlighted that many former soldiers struggle to secure proper housing, while families of fallen officers are often left in difficult circumstances. They urged the government to create a structured programme that ensures these groups have access to long-term accommodation.

Under the proposal, the Federal Ministry of Housing would work in partnership with the Ministry of Defence to implement the scheme, with priority housing units allocated to widows and dependants of deceased service members.

The move is part of broader efforts to improve welfare and social support for military personnel, ensuring they and their families receive recognition and protection for their service to the nation.
