Tension erupted at the Enugu State High Court on Monday as a group of protesters interrupted the opening ceremony of the 2026 legal year, pressing for the release of a detained lawmaker.

The protesters entered the venue during the official programme, holding banners and chanting slogans calling for the immediate freedom of the elected representative, whose detention has prevented them from assuming office. Security personnel quickly moved in to control the situation, temporarily pausing the proceedings.

Leaders of the protest criticized the delays in the legal process, saying that holding an elected official in custody undermines the democratic choice of the people. They urged authorities to act promptly to resolve the matter.

After the disruption, security restored order, and the judiciary resumed its planned programme, though the incident highlighted rising public frustration over political detentions and court delays.
