Abia State Governor Alex Otti has shrugged off threats from three former governors who say they may take him to court over his choice to conduct official business from his private residence rather than the Umuahia Government House. The ex-governors argue he should operate from the state capital, but Otti insists he hasn’t violated any law and is prepared to face any legal challenge.
Otti explained that the Government House in Umuahia is in poor condition, and rather than rush into moving there, he has focused on repairing critical infrastructure and delivering services across the state. He said the Constitution doesn’t mandate that a governor must work from a specific building, adding that residents care more about development outcomes than the physical location of his office.
The governor’s position has sparked political debate, with critics accusing him of avoiding responsibility and supporters highlighting his emphasis on public projects. Despite the pressure, Otti says his legal team is ready for any case that might be brought against him and that his administration remains committed to its development agenda.
