Nigeria’s basketball sector is under scrutiny as key members of the basketball community call for an international review of the federation’s leadership. Stakeholders are requesting that the global governing body, FIBA, step in to clarify governance issues and oversee the process of selecting new leaders.
According to the petition, several state associations and affiliated members have raised concerns about the current board’s compliance with the federation’s rules. They claim that required meetings have not been held and that leadership terms have exceeded their constitutional limits.
The group is urging FIBA to confirm the end of the current board’s tenure and provide guidance on organising new elections in a transparent manner. Their goal is to ensure that the governance of Nigerian basketball aligns with both national and international standards.
This appeal comes amid ongoing disagreements about the legitimacy of the current administration, which has maintained that its leadership is valid despite calls for reform. The stakeholders emphasize that proper elections are essential for restoring confidence in the sport at both grassroots and professional levels.
FIBA and the Nigeria Basketball Federation have yet to issue official statements regarding the petition. Basketball enthusiasts and state representatives are watching closely, hoping for swift intervention to stabilise the sport’s administration.
