“Samuel Ikpefan Leads Nigeria’s Winter Olympics Charge in Italy”

Nigeria is set to make its mark at the Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics with Samuel Ikpefan, the country’s sole competitor, representing the nation in cross-country skiing.

Ikpefan, born and raised in the French Alps, qualifies to represent Nigeria through his heritage and has earned the only available quota spot for the country in cross-country skiing. This will be Nigeria’s third appearance at the Winter Games, highlighting the nation’s continued participation despite limited winter sports facilities at home.

A returning Olympian from Beijing 2022, Samuel Ikpefan is set to compete in both sprint and distance events. Over the years, he has also taken part in multiple international competitions, building experience on the global skiing circuit.

Although Nigeria has yet to secure a medal at the Winter Olympics, the consistent presence of its athletes, from bobsleigh and skeleton to Ikpefan’s skiing, reflects the nation’s growing footprint in winter sports traditionally dominated by colder-climate countries.

Samuel Ikpefan’s participation not only represents personal achievement but also serves as inspiration for aspiring Nigerian athletes hoping to break into winter sports and showcase their talents on the Olympic stage.
