Nigeria in Talks to Host Iran for Pre‑World Cup Warm‑Up Match

Iran’s national football authorities are reportedly in talks with the Nigeria Football Federation to set up an international friendly match in March as part of their build‑up to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The proposed fixture is being discussed alongside another potential warm‑up game against Costa Rica.

Team Melli — Iran’s senior men’s team — is said to be finalising its schedule of preparation games ahead of the tournament, and Nigeria has emerged as one of the teams under consideration, with negotiations already underway.

For the Super Eagles, any March friendly hinges on the outcome of an ongoing FIFA ruling over Nigeria’s eligibility protest concerning a World Cup qualifying match against the Democratic Republic of Congo. A decision from FIFA could determine whether Nigeria’s schedule allows for additional international matches.

There have also been discussions with Senegal about a possible friendly, although no formal agreement has been reached.

Iran have been drawn into Group G for the World Cup, where they will face Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand, and are keen to secure competitive warm‑up fixtures to prepare their squad.

The proposed game with Nigeria would be part of both nations’ efforts to fine‑tune ahead of the global showpiece, but details remain subject to final confirmation by the respective football federations.
