The Ebonyi State Sports Council has announced plans to collaborate with the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Ebonyi chapter, aiming to strengthen sports development across the state. The Acting Director of Sports, Alep David, said the partnership will leverage SWAN’s expertise in highlighting and promoting sporting activities.

David emphasized the critical role sports journalists play in shaping athletic programs, citing their coverage of the Abakaliki Football Club’s impressive run in the President Federation Cup as a prime example. He noted that such achievements would have gained less attention without SWAN’s media support.

The collaboration is expected to be particularly valuable in organising the upcoming zonal cricket championship, an event that state officials and SWAN leaders hope will showcase local talent and elevate the profile of cricket, which has become one of Ebonyi’s fastest-growing sports.

Leaders of SWAN expressed gratitude for the council’s support and reaffirmed their commitment to promoting state sports initiatives. They also called on authorities to expedite the provision of a proper office space for SWAN to enhance their reporting and operational effectiveness.
