Former Super Eagles players Emmanuel Amuneke, Etim Esin, and Azubuike Egwuekwe have spoken out about how the national team should balance its recruitment strategy as more players born abroad express interest in representing Nigeria.

The trio called on the Nigeria Football Federation and coach Eric Chelle to be selective in embracing foreign-born players, stressing that only those who clearly strengthen the team’s competitive edge should be considered. They also emphasized that giving genuine opportunities to homegrown players and investing in domestic development remains crucial for long-term success.

Several foreign-born players have pledged their international futures to Nigeria, and discussions are ongoing with others who meet eligibility criteria. Coach Chelle has acknowledged this growing trend but insists that standards won’t be compromised and that any new additions must fit into the team’s tactical plans.

While welcoming top-quality players regardless of origin, the former stars argued that neglecting the domestic league and its talents could harm the growth of Nigerian football. They pointed to the need for better facilities, stronger youth structures, and more meaningful chances for home-based players to earn national team call-ups. Their view is that a balanced approach — one that values both quality and local development — will best serve the Super Eagles’ future aspirations.
