A workers’ advocacy organisation has called on the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to uphold human rights standards and immediately facilitate the return of the international passport belonging to activist Omoyele Sowore.

The group raised concerns over what it described as continued restrictions placed on Sowore, arguing that such actions undermine constitutional freedoms and the rule of law. It urged the police leadership to demonstrate commitment to justice by ensuring that citizens’ rights are not violated under any circumstances.

According to the organisation, the withholding of Sowore’s passport is unjustified and reflects broader issues around civil liberties and the treatment of dissenting voices in the country. It further emphasised that law enforcement agencies must operate within legal boundaries while maintaining public trust.

The group also appealed for reforms that would prioritise accountability and respect for fundamental rights within the police force, stressing that Nigeria’s democracy depends on institutions that protect, rather than suppress, lawful expression.

Authorities have yet to issue an official response to the demands as discussions around civil rights and policing continue to generate debate.
