Nigeria Celebrates Boxing History as Trials for Glasgow Commence

The Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF) has launched its first-ever National Boxing Week in Lagos with a special tribute to the late boxing great Hogan Bassey, whose success on the world stage helped put Nigerian boxing on the map.

During the colourful opening ceremony at the graveside of Bassey in the National Stadium, Surulere, federation officials, athletes, coaches, and supporters gathered to honour his enduring legacy. Flowers were laid and tributes paid to the former world featherweight champion, whose achievements continue to inspire emerging Nigerian fighters.

As the week unfolds at the Brai Ayonote Boxing Complex, the spotlight has shifted to the open trials intended to pick Nigeria’s boxing team for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. Boxers from across the country, and others based abroad, are taking part in competitions across 10 weight divisions.

NBF leaders have stressed that selections will be based on performance and merit, moving away from past practices where team picks were less transparent. Officials also unveiled plans to modernise boxing administration with new digital systems designed to streamline licensing and improve governance within the sport.

The week’s activities — combining celebration of history, talent development, and structural reform — reflect a broader effort to elevate Nigerian boxing both inside and outside the ring.
