Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, the D’Tigress, announced themselves with authority at the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup qualifying tournament on Wednesday, rolling past Colombia 70–37 in Lyon, France.
From the opening tip, the African champions set a full‑court pace, dictating tempo on both ends of the floor. After a closely contested first half that saw Nigeria lead 34–29, the D’Tigress seized control in the second half with aggressive defense that kept Colombia to just eight points over the final two quarters.
Veteran forward Victoria Macaulay led the scoring with 13 points and six rebounds, shining in limited minutes and setting the tone for her teammates. Big contributions also came from Nicole Enabosi and Ifunanya Okoro, each scoring double figures and helping build Nigeria’s commanding advantage.
Although Nigeria had already secured a spot in the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Germany as African champions, the qualifying series gives the team a chance to test tactics and boost their international ranking ahead of the global event.
The D’Tigress now turn their attention to their next challenge against South Korea as they look to build momentum in the tournament.
