Iran has announced that its national football team will not take part in the 2026 FIFA World Cup following the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in airstrikes reportedly carried out by the United States and Israel, which have also escalated tensions into a wider conflict in the Middle East.

According to nation.com.pk, Iran’s Sports Minister, Ahmad Donyamali, made the announcement during a broadcast on state television yesterday. He said the country would not participate in the tournament scheduled to be hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.

Donyamali accused the United States of being responsible for the killing of Iran’s leader and said the prevailing circumstances made it impossible for the national team to travel to the U.S. for the competition.

“Under no circumstances can we participate in the World Cup,” he said, adding that ongoing hostilities and security concerns made the environment unsuitable for Iran’s involvement.

He further alleged that the United States and Israel had imposed several wars on Iran, resulting in thousands of deaths, stressing that the government could not send its team to compete under such conditions.

Iran had earlier secured qualification for the expanded 48-team tournament and was the first nation to book a place at the 2026 World Cup. However, the country’s Group G matches, including games scheduled in Los Angeles and Seattle, are set to be played in the United States.

Despite Tehran’s declaration, FIFA President Gianni Infantino said he had spoken with U.S. President Donald Trump on the matter. According to Infantino, Trump reiterated that the Iranian national team would be welcomed to participate in the tournament.

Infantino also stressed that football should serve as a unifying force, particularly during periods of global tension, highlighting the World Cup’s role in bringing nations together.

Iran’s decision, however, could leave a slot open in Group G if the withdrawal becomes official.

FIFA has yet to announce how it will address the situation, though possibilities include inviting a replacement team or imposing sanctions if Iran formally confirms its withdrawal.
