Nigeria is facing a severe Lassa fever outbreak, with fatalities rising to 109 this year. Health authorities say this marks a significant increase compared to previous weeks.

Although new confirmed infections have recently slowed, the overall case fatality rate has risen compared with the same period last year.

The virus has affected several regions, with Bauchi and Ondo among the hardest hit, along with Taraba, Benue, and Edo, which together account for the majority of reported cases.

Authorities have also raised concerns about health workers contracting the disease, emphasizing the risks faced by frontline medical staff and urging continued vigilance to protect communities.
