The Akwa Ibom State Government has rejected claims that it intends to sell the state-owned Ibom Power Company, describing the report as false. Officials urged the public not to be misled by the misinformation.

The Commissioner for Information emphasized that there has been no approval or discussion about selling the power facility. Instead, the government is focused on strengthening the company, including repaying a $9 million loan to Afreximbank to support its operations.

Authorities also highlighted ongoing efforts to improve the state’s electricity sector, including plans to encourage private sector participation while retaining government ownership of key power assets.

Challenges in electricity distribution were noted as being largely outside the direct control of the state government, with discussions ongoing with relevant agencies to address these issues.

The administration reiterated its commitment to providing reliable power to residents and ensuring the stability of Ibom Power Company.
