Akwa Ibom Safely Repatriates 44 Rescued Ghanaians

In a strong move against human trafficking, the Akwa Ibom State Government has successfully repatriated 44 Ghanaian nationals who were rescued from illegal trafficking operations within the state.

The group, consisting of 27 men and 17 women, was found living in unsafe conditions at several locations, including Umo Ekpo, Ifuho, and Ekpri Nsukara in Uyo. State authorities said the victims had been misled with promises of jobs and opportunities abroad, only to become victims of trafficking.

Princess Emem Ibanga, Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, explained that the state is intensifying efforts to combat trafficking networks. She stated that the government has implemented measures to track and dismantle criminal operations while ensuring that rescued victims receive proper care and support.

Officials from the Ghana High Commission received the repatriated individuals and promised to assist in their reintegration and family reunification. Both sides emphasized the importance of public awareness campaigns to prevent future trafficking and protect vulnerable populations.
