A Nigerian medical specialist has called on the Federal Government to take urgent action to prevent the country’s health sector from collapsing, warning that underfunding and poor working conditions are placing the system at risk. The appeal was made during a community health outreach event in Abeokuta, where free medical services were provided to over 200 residents.
The expert noted that many hospitals across the country are struggling due to limited budgets, outdated equipment, and low morale among healthcare workers. She stressed that without increased investment and improved facilities, the sector’s challenges could worsen, compromising the quality of care for patients.
A major concern highlighted was the growing number of medical professionals leaving Nigeria for opportunities abroad, leaving local health facilities understaffed and overwhelmed. She emphasized that better pay and working conditions are crucial to retaining skilled doctors and nurses.
In addition to calling for increased government funding, the practitioner urged authorities to prioritise healthcare in national budgets and implement regular support and monitoring for health workers to strengthen service delivery and protect communities.
