The All Progressives Congress (APC) is set for a crucial moment as it prepares for its 2026 National Convention, with major issues expected to shape the party’s future ahead of the 2027 general elections.
At the centre of discussions are zoning arrangements, President Bola Tinubu’s influence, and the role of state governors. What would typically be a routine party event has now evolved into a significant political exercise that could determine the APC’s unity, structure, and electoral strength.
Zoning remains the most sensitive issue, as the party seeks to balance regional interests and maintain internal harmony. Any shift in the existing arrangement risks reopening divisions among party stakeholders.
Equally important is the composition of the National Working Committee (NWC), which plays a key role in managing party affairs, resolving disputes, and influencing candidate selection. Control of this structure has attracted intense interest from political power brokers, particularly governors who wield strong influence over party delegates.
President Tinubu’s perceived preferences have also shaped alignments within the party. His reported backing of certain candidates, including for the national chairmanship, has strengthened calls for continuity in leadership.
At the same time, APC governors, especially those who recently joined the party, are pushing to secure positions for their loyalists, creating tension with long-standing members who feel sidelined despite their contributions to building the party.
Across several states, including Delta, Enugu, Zamfara, and Adamawa, rival factions are already competing for influence, highlighting broader struggles between established party figures and newer entrants.
While the APC has retained its zoning formula to ensure regional balance, debates continue over fairness at the state level, with some aspirants alleging exclusion from the process.
As consultations intensify ahead of the convention, the party faces the challenge of balancing competing interests without deepening divisions.
Observers say the outcome will depend on how well party leaders, including the presidency and governors, manage negotiations and accommodate different viewpoints.
Ultimately, the convention is seen as a critical test of the APC’s internal democracy. A transparent and inclusive process could strengthen unity and public confidence, while perceived bias or exclusion may deepen internal rifts and weaken the party ahead of 2027.
