Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has responded to the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), denying claims that he staged a press conference within court premises.
The NBA President, Afam Osigwe (SAN), had earlier warned against using courtrooms as venues for media briefings, reacting to an incident involving Sowore at the Federal High Court.
In a statement posted on his verified X account, Sowore described the allegation as false and criticised the NBA for what he called a misleading narrative.
He explained that he was at the court to obtain a Certified True Copy of a ruling that struck out a cybercrime charge filed against him in January 2025. According to him, the case was delayed after the police filed additional motions, prompting him and his team to wait for the judge.
Sowore said while waiting, journalists attached to the court approached him for comments, which he granted, noting that such interactions are routine within court environments.
“I did not organise any press conference. I simply responded to questions from journalists, as I have always done,” he said.
He also accused the NBA of selective outrage, questioning its silence during past incidents involving alleged violations of court processes by security agencies.
Sowore further stated that court records would confirm that his case was before the court and that both legal representatives were present. He added that the judge later reaffirmed the ruling striking out the case and ordered the release of his international passport.
The activist also alleged intimidation by some lawyers during the incident, describing it as part of a growing culture of impunity.
He concluded by urging the NBA to uphold fairness and consistency in defending the rule of law, warning that misinformation could undermine public trust in the legal system.
