The Abia State government has addressed concerns following the arrest of Staff Sergeant Amoke Simon of the Nigerian Army, who had recently received a promise of medical assistance from Governor Alex Otti.
Military authorities confirmed that Sergeant Amoke was taken into custody over allegations of past fraud. The state government clarified that its support was extended on compassionate grounds, recognizing that the personnel had previously served in Abia State and sustained injuries while on duty. An NGO had referred him to the government for medical aid.
Governor Otti’s administration emphasized that acts of support are part of a broader humanitarian policy, which has also assisted other security personnel and citizens affected by accidents or misfortune. Examples include aid provided to the family of a naval officer killed in a car crash near Osisioma Flyover, Aba, financial support to the family of an immigration officer allegedly murdered in Umuahia, and medical treatment sponsored for eight army personnel involved in a recent auto accident. All aid is preceded by careful investigation to ensure legitimacy.
While the government does not investigate allegations of corruption, it requested proper due diligence in Sergeant Amoke’s case, which may have contributed to the military’s action.
Abia State reiterated its full support for lawful disciplinary actions by the Nigerian Army while maintaining its commitment to offer medical, financial, and humanitarian assistance to citizens and security personnel facing hardship, regardless of ongoing controversies.
