The Abia State Government has advanced its healthcare reform agenda with fresh approvals aimed at boosting manpower, improving training standards, and enhancing public health outcomes across the state.
Speaking after the latest State Executive Council meeting in Umuahia, the Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, disclosed that Governor Alex Otti has sanctioned the recruitment of 50 additional nurses. This move raises the total number of newly engaged nurses to 550, building on earlier efforts that saw hundreds of healthcare workers brought into the system under the state’s ongoing workforce development initiative.
Kanu explained that the recruitment drive is part of a broader plan to address staffing gaps in public health facilities and ensure improved service delivery. He noted that the government had previously approved the hiring of over 700 medical personnel across various categories, with significant progress already recorded.
The commissioner also revealed progress in the accreditation process of the Abia State College of Nursing Sciences, particularly for its National Diploma programme. According to him, a recent inspection by the National Board for Technical Education yielded positive feedback, with the institution commended for its upgraded facilities and improved academic standards.
In addition, the state has entered into a partnership with MedShare USA to train local technicians on maintaining and repairing medical equipment. The collaboration is expected to also equip healthcare workers with the skills to operate modern surgical tools being deployed in hospitals across Abia.
On the public health front, Kanu reassured residents that no cases of major infectious diseases have been recorded in the state within the review period. He listed illnesses such as Lassa fever, cholera, yellow fever, diphtheria, Mpox, and rabies, noting that Abia has remained free of outbreaks, reflecting improved disease surveillance and response systems.
These initiatives, he said, highlight the administration’s determination to build a more efficient, resilient, and modern healthcare system capable of meeting the needs of its population.
