The political climate in Rivers State appears to be heating up following strong remarks by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, hinting at a major shift in alliances ahead of the 2027 governorship election.

Speaking during a private meeting with select political stakeholders in Abuja, Wike made it clear he would not support Governor Siminalayi Fubara for another term in office. He described his earlier backing of Fubara in 2023 as a misjudgment he has no intention of repeating, insisting that no pressure or persuasion would change his stance.

Wike blamed the current tensions within the state’s political structure on what he characterized as betrayal among former allies. He warned aspirants and interest groups against invoking his name to gain political advantage, stressing that he is closely monitoring developments and would not tolerate opportunistic moves.

The minister also urged his loyalists to remain cautious and strategic, advising them to avoid being swayed by political actors seeking personal gain. He maintained that he remains unbothered by opposition or criticism, adding that political challenges only strengthen his resolve.

Amid the unfolding developments, Bomah Iyaye dismissed claims linking him to any governorship ambition or endorsement from Wike, describing such reports as false. Meanwhile, uncertainty continues to surround Governor Fubara’s plans for 2027, although close associates insist he remains a strong contender. Observers say the latest developments could set the stage for an intense and closely watched political battle in Rivers State.
