Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has praised the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) for its plan to digitise the asset declaration process, describing the move as a step in line with global best practices and ongoing reforms in the state.

Otti gave the commendation on Tuesday while receiving the Zonal Director of the CCB, Southeast Zone, Mr. Akinfolarin Feyishola, at Government House, Umuahia.

The governor said transitioning to an electronic system would enhance efficiency and transparency, noting that modern governance demands the adoption of technology in public service delivery.

He explained that the Abia State Government has already embraced digital processes in several areas, including the electronic processing and signing of Certificates of Occupancy.

According to him, public officials who fail to adapt to technological advancements risk being left behind.

Otti stressed the critical role of the Code of Conduct Bureau in Nigeria’s democratic framework, insisting that asset declaration is a fundamental requirement for all public office holders.

He disclosed that both he and his deputy declared their assets before assuming office and directed that all political appointees and public officers in the state comply fully with the constitutional mandate.

The governor further instructed the Secretary to the State Government to work with relevant authorities to ensure compliance, while also directing the Commissioner for Lands to assess the condition of the CCB office in Umuahia for possible upgrade.

He assured that the state government would consider the bureau’s request for an official vehicle to support its operations.

Earlier, Mr. Feyishola commended Governor Otti for his achievements, noting that developments in Abia State are gaining national attention.

He revealed that the bureau is working towards fully automating the asset declaration process, with plans to go completely online by the third quarter of the year.

Feyishola also called for support in sensitising political office holders in the state on compliance requirements and suggested that proof of asset declaration be made a condition for receiving salaries and allowances.

He noted that the bureau has already stopped issuing physical asset declaration forms as part of the transition to a digital system.

The meeting was attended by top government officials, including the Deputy Governor, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu; Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Emmanuel Meribeole; Chief of Staff, Pastor Caleb Ajagba; Commissioner for Lands, Mr. Chaka Chukwumerije; among others.
