United Nigeria Airlines (UNA) has suspended one of its employees following allegations of unprofessional treatment of a passenger with reduced mobility, Ms. Doris Akonanya.
In a statement issued by the airline’s spokesperson, Chibuike Uloka, the incident reportedly occurred during the check-in process for flight UN0526 from Abuja to Yenagoa on March 30, 2026.
The airline confirmed receiving a report detailing the alleged mishandling and described the situation as one it takes seriously. It reiterated that the safety, dignity, and well-being of all passengers remain a top priority, stressing its zero-tolerance stance on misconduct, discrimination, or abuse, especially involving passengers requiring special assistance.
According to UNA, the staff member will remain suspended pending the outcome of a full investigation. The airline added that all relevant parties are being engaged to determine the facts, assuring that appropriate disciplinary actions would follow in line with its policies.
“We sincerely apologise to Ms. Akonanya and her family for the distress this incident has caused. This experience does not reflect our values or the standard of service we are committed to delivering,” the airline stated.
Uloka further noted that the airline has maintained direct communication with the passenger and her family, offering apologies and addressing their concerns while keeping them updated on ongoing actions.
UNA also pledged to strengthen staff training, operational procedures, and oversight to prevent similar incidents in the future, while appreciating the public’s concern as investigations continue.
