INEC Maintains Hold on Voter Verification Plan Amid Uncertainty

Nigeria’s electoral body, the Independent National Electoral Commission, has reaffirmed that its proposed voter revalidation exercise will not proceed for now, despite earlier announcements suggesting it would commence soon.

A senior official of the commission clarified that the exercise remains suspended, stressing that no fresh directive has been issued to restart the process. The official urged the public to disregard any speculation about an immediate rollout.

The revalidation initiative was initially designed to update the national voter register by identifying and removing invalid entries, including duplicate and ineligible records, ahead of future elections. However, the commission abruptly halted preparations, instructing its state-level officials to pause all related activities.

Although field operations have been put on hold, internal planning and technical groundwork are still ongoing as the commission reviews the timing and broader implications of the exercise.

The development follows growing debate among stakeholders over the schedule and potential impact of the exercise, particularly as preparations gradually intensify for the next general elections.

INEC has assured Nigerians that any decision to resume the process will be communicated clearly, maintaining that transparency and credibility remain central to its electoral responsibilities.
