APC Tensions Rise in Abia as Mascot Kalu Rejects Alleged Endorsement Move

A governorship aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State, Sir Mascot Uzor Kalu, has raised concerns over what he described as an attempt to impose a preferred candidate ahead of the 2027 elections.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Kalu alleged that a planned meeting in Umuahia—reportedly organised under the guise of mobilising support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election—may be used to push an endorsement agenda for a particular aspirant.

He warned that any such move carried out without the involvement of all aspirants would be invalid and unacceptable.

Kalu stressed that the party must uphold internal democracy, noting that elected party officials have a responsibility to remain fair and neutral rather than advance personal interests.

He also cautioned the APC State Working Committee against actions that could deepen divisions within the party, insisting that due process must guide all activities.

Reaffirming his commitment to the race, Kalu said he would not be pressured to step down, maintaining that every qualified Abian has the constitutional right to contest.

He further advised party officials to avoid meetings convened by individual aspirants or interest groups, warning that such actions could undermine the party’s integrity.

The development signals growing internal friction within the Abia APC as political stakeholders begin to position themselves ahead of the party’s governorship primaries.
