The Federal Government has amended the cybercrime charges filed against activist and publisher Omoyele Sowore, removing global social media companies Meta Platforms Inc. and X Corp. as defendants in the case.
The revised charge, filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja, now lists Sowore as the sole defendant. It centers on posts made on his verified social media accounts in August 2025, which the government alleges contained false and defamatory statements against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Prosecutors claim the posts were capable of inciting public unrest and violating provisions of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, Etc.) Amendment Act, 2024. The original charge had included Meta and X on the grounds that the posts were published on their platforms, but the court later struck out the companies from the case following an amendment by the prosecution.
Sowore pleaded not guilty to the amended charges during his re-arraignment before the court. The trial is scheduled to commence later this month at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
