Abuja – The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mallam Mohammed Idris, has stated that Nigeria’s economy is steadily improving under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, thanks to a series of strategic reforms being implemented across various sectors.
Idris made the remarks on Wednesday in Abuja while receiving members and the newly elected executives of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), who paid a courtesy visit to his office.
While acknowledging that economic challenges still persist, the Minister emphasized that meaningful progress is being made. “The economy may not yet be where we want it to be, but we are seeing steady improvements,” he said. “President Tinubu has consistently stated that we are turning the corner. While it may not yet be El-dorado, progress is evident, and international rating agencies are beginning to reflect this in their assessments.”
He cited major policy actions such as the removal of fuel subsidies and the unification of exchange rates as critical steps that are beginning to yield tangible results in economic recovery.
The Minister also highlighted the administration’s commitment to education, revealing that over 300,000 students are currently benefitting from the newly introduced Students Loan Scheme, which covers tuition and provides support for living expenses. “This policy has given thousands of students who might have dropped out a chance to stay in school. It’s an unprecedented initiative,” he noted.
Addressing the nation’s security situation, Idris said the government is taking firm action and making notable gains in combating violent crimes across the country. He urged the media to support the Armed Forces by reporting not just the challenges, but also their achievements and sacrifices.
In response to a report on media law reform submitted by the Guild, Idris promised to consult with the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation. He also announced plans to establish an internal committee to review the document and make appropriate recommendations.
Earlier, NGE Deputy President, Dr. Sebastian Abu, said the visit was to formally present the Guild’s Law Reform Report, which identifies outdated media laws needing review or repeal to ensure a freer and more supportive environment for journalism in Nigeria.
