DSS Arrests Suspect Over Alleged Assassination Attempt on Obi, Oyegun

The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested a suspect allegedly linked to the recent attack on the 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, in Benin, Edo State.

Obi was reportedly attacked alongside former Edo State Governor John Oyegun and other leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) during a political meeting in Benin. Armed men allegedly opened fire at the gathering, sparking panic, though no fatalities were reported.

Following the incident, a man identified as Udeme Monday Stephen allegedly took to his X (formerly Twitter) account, @stevetom788, claiming responsibility for the attack and issuing further threats against Obi. In a series of posts, he warned that the former presidential candidate would face additional attacks in the future.

A senior security source revealed that DSS operatives swiftly launched a covert investigation after the online threats surfaced. Through forensic analysis and digital tracking, the agency reportedly traced and apprehended the suspect.

According to the source, the suspect, 26-year-old Udeme Monday Stephen, is a teacher at Jessica High School in Eliozu, Umuehere Community, Obio-Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State. The source stated that forensic findings allegedly linked him to the threats and attack.

Meanwhile, Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has directed all public office holders intending to contest the 2027 general elections to resign from their positions.

In a statement dated February 28, 2026, and signed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Umar Ikhilor, affected officials were instructed to step down no later than March 1, 2026.

The directive, according to the statement, aims to ensure fairness, transparency, and neutrality in the political process, preventing public offices from being used for partisan activities.

“Public office holders are reminded that governance responsibilities must not be compromised by political ambitions,” the statement read. “All affected officers are advised to comply within the stipulated timeline.”

Two appointees have already resigned in response to the directive. They are the Deputy Chief of Staff, Government House, Pius Alile, and Terry Igiebor, a member of the Edo State Audit Service, both believed to be preparing to contest in the 2027 elections.
