At about 8:21 a.m. on July 12, 2025, a deadly attack unfolded at a construction site run by a Chinese engineering firm. According to eyewitness accounts, six armed men wearing military camouflage arrived on three motorcycles and opened fire on workers at the site. In the assault, a site driver and a soldier providing security were killed. The attackers reportedly seized the soldier’s rifle before fleeing the scene.
Preliminary investigations suggest the assailants may have come from a neighboring state and are likely members of a notorious kidnapping syndicate. Sources further allege the operation was led by a fugitive with military training.
Security forces responded swiftly, launching coordinated operations in the area. The body of the slain driver was evacuated to a hospital morgue, and several used AK-47 bullet casings were recovered at the scene.
Following a credible tip-off, authorities apprehended a suspect with alleged links to the incident at a hideout in Umuahia North Local Government Area. He is currently in custody and undergoing interrogation, while efforts continue to locate other suspects on the run.
Attempts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka, for comment were unsuccessful. Meanwhile, security operations remain ongoing as law enforcement intensifies efforts to track down the perpetrators and ensure justice is served.
