The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) will on Wednesday present certificates of return to chairmen and councillors elected across the 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) of the state.
LASIEC Chairperson, Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile (retd.), confirmed the development via a phone conversation, noting that the event was initially slated for Tuesday but was rescheduled due to the public holiday declared by the Federal Government.
“It was supposed to hold on Tuesday,” she said, “but due to the public holiday on that day, it has been moved to the next working day, which is Wednesday.”
The public holiday was declared in honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday in a London hospital. His burial is scheduled for Tuesday in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State.
An official of LASIEC, speaking on condition of anonymity, also confirmed that the presentation ceremony will be held at the commission’s headquarters on Wednesday. “All elected local government chairmen and councillors are expected to receive their certificates of return on Wednesday,” the official stated.
In the local government elections conducted on Saturday, July 12, 2025, the All Progressives Congress (APC) claimed a landslide victory, securing all 57 chairmanship seats and 375 out of 376 councillorship positions across the state.
The only exception was Ward D in Yaba LCDA, where Babatunde Dosunmu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) defeated his APC opponent. Justice Okikiolu-Ighile officially announced the election results on Sunday from LASIEC headquarters in Sabo, Yaba.
