Court Clears Ex-Governor Fayose of Money Laundering Charges

The Federal High Court in Abuja has discharged and acquitted former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, of all charges relating to money laundering and fraud. The ruling was delivered on Wednesday, July 16, bringing an end to a prolonged legal battle with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Fayose, who was previously arraigned by the EFCC on allegations of financial misconduct during his time in office, had consistently denied the charges. His legal team filed a no-case submission, arguing that the prosecution had failed to present sufficient evidence to proceed with the case.

In its decision, the court ruled in favour of the former governor’s application, stating that the EFCC did not establish a prima facie case that would necessitate a defence. The presiding judge emphasized that the prosecution’s evidence lacked the substance required to link Fayose to the alleged offences.

The court noted that while the EFCC brought forward multiple allegations, none were adequately supported by credible evidence. As a result, the trial was deemed unsustainable and Fayose was fully discharged of all accusations.

This ruling marks a significant legal victory for Fayose, who has maintained that the charges were politically motivated and unfounded. The decision effectively ends years of prosecution tied to his administration’s financial dealings.

Legal observers have described the ruling as a blow to the EFCC’s case and a reaffirmation of the principle that accusations must be supported by solid proof. The judgment may also have broader implications for similar high-profile corruption cases across the country.
