The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has restated its confidence in the judiciary as the last hope for the common man, despite what it described as ongoing challenges in Nigeria’s judicial system.

In a statement on Thursday by its spokesperson, Emma Powerful, titled “Justice Must Not Be Abducted: The World is Watching Omotosho’s Court,” IPOB emphasized the critical role of judicial independence and the rule of law, particularly in relation to the trial of its detained leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

“We and many justice-conscious Nigerians still hold the judiciary in high regard as the ultimate refuge for justice,” the group noted.

IPOB stressed the need for court decisions to be grounded solely on the law, factual evidence, and proceedings conducted transparently in open court. It referenced a recent ruling by Kenya’s High Court regarding the legality of Kanu’s extradition to Nigeria, stating that this development has intensified international attention on the trial.

Raising legal objections over the issue of jurisdiction, IPOB cited the principle of double criminality — which requires that an alleged crime must be recognized as such in both the country of arrest and the country requesting extradition. The group insisted that this principle must be satisfied for the trial to proceed legitimately under Nigerian law.

The statement further underscored the need for due process in cross-border legal matters, noting that adherence to international legal standards is essential for the legitimacy of such proceedings.

While commending the professionalism of the trial judge, IPOB called for fairness, transparency, and strict adherence to constitutional and legal principles. It concluded by urging the judiciary to uphold justice and reconsider the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu based on the group’s legal interpretation.
