The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has selected Donald Amamgbo as its flagbearer for the upcoming Anambra South Senatorial by-election, scheduled for August 16, 2025.

Amamgbo emerged as the consensus candidate during the ADC primary election held on Saturday at the Anyi Bu Ofu Social Hall in Mmili Kwu, Nnewi. The exercise, monitored by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), saw other aspirants step down in his favour.

His candidacy was unanimously adopted following a motion moved by Ndukaba Chinedu from Orumba South Local Government Area and seconded by Anene Chukwudi from Ihiala Local Government Area.

In his acceptance speech, Amamgbo thanked party delegates for their trust, pledging to deliver democratic dividends if elected. “We shall storm Anambra South, and when we win, we will go to Abuja and bring your share of democracy dividends and good governance,” he declared.

Promising impactful representation despite the short duration of the tenure, Amamgbo emphasized his passion for the welfare of the people. “I am not a professional politician, but I am driven by the desire to make a meaningful change,” he stated.

ADC State Chairman, Patrick Obianyo, commended party members for the peaceful and united conduct of the primary, noting that the party is entering a new era of relevance.

Also speaking at the event, ADC Board of Trustees member Godson Okoye confirmed the primary adhered strictly to the party’s constitution and expressed confidence in Amamgbo’s chances at the polls.

The Anambra South seat became vacant following the death of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah. INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, had earlier announced that by-elections to fill legislative vacancies across 12 states would be held on Saturday, August 16, 2025. The vacancies resulted from resignations, court rulings, and deaths.
