Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has honoured a police officer, Superintendent Sentome Obi, with a three-bedroom flat and a car for rejecting a $17,000 bribe from a suspected kidnapper.

Obi was also recommended by the governor to the Inspector-General of Police for a well-deserved promotion in recognition of his integrity and professionalism.

The bribe was allegedly offered by a suspect involved in the abduction of the state’s Chief Judge, Justice Ebiyerin Omukoro, who was kidnapped on June 21 and released after 12 days in captivity.

Speaking at the State Executive Council meeting held in Yenagoa on Wednesday, Governor Diri announced that all members of the kidnapping gang, except their leader who remains at large, had been arrested through coordinated efforts by security agencies.

“Bayelsa has zero tolerance for crime and criminality,” the governor said. “We have greatly enhanced our crime-fighting capacity through the deployment of technology. With support from the state, security agencies successfully rescued the judge unharmed.”

Governor Diri described Superintendent Obi as a beacon of integrity whose conduct reflects positively on the Nigerian Police Force and brings honour to Bayelsa State.

“His principled stand against corruption is commendable. He is a shining example of what the Police should represent—honour, discipline, and service to the people,” Diri stated.
