The Ogun State government has reiterated that the law banning open grazing is still in effect and warned that violators will face serious legal consequences.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by Kayode Akinmade, the Special Adviser to Governor Dapo Abiodun on Information and Strategy, the government emphasized the continued enforcement of the Animal Grazing Regulation and Cattle Ranch Establishment Law 2020, signed into law in 2021.
The government’s warning follows growing reports of traffic disruptions and farmland destruction caused by cattle herders in various parts of the state. Akinmade condemned the repeated violations and said such activities directly contravene the existing law aimed at preventing violent clashes between herders and farmers.
He stressed that the law prescribes a minimum of three years’ imprisonment without the option of a fine, in addition to the forfeiture of any livestock found grazing outside designated ranches.
“The Ogun State Government has noticed ongoing obstruction of traffic, trespassing on farmlands, and the destruction of crops—all of which are clear breaches of the law,” Akinmade stated. “These actions will no longer be tolerated. Open grazing remains strictly prohibited, and anyone caught violating the law will be arrested and prosecuted accordingly.”
While noting that cattle owners and herders are free to operate within the bounds of the law, Akinmade reiterated that their activities must not disrupt public order, encroach on private property, or endanger lives and livelihoods.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to promoting modern livestock farming practices and ensuring the safety and security of all residents.
