The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has established a Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Akwa Ibom State as part of efforts to strengthen air operations and enhance maritime security across the South-South region, particularly around the Gulf of Guinea.

This development was announced by the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, during a courtesy visit to Governor Umo Eno in Uyo, the state capital.

A statement issued in Abuja by NAF’s Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, on Friday, confirmed that the Akwa Ibom State Government donated the land on which the new base will be sited.

Air Marshal Abubakar commended the state government for the gesture, describing it as a significant contribution to national security. He noted that the base would not only improve NAF’s operational readiness in the region but also boost investor confidence and support socio-economic activities such as commerce and tourism.

“The establishment of this Forward Operating Base is a critical step toward enhancing air power projection, reinforcing security along the Gulf of Guinea, and safeguarding lives and property,” he said.

Governor Eno, in his response, expressed appreciation for the Air Chief’s visit, saying it underscored Akwa Ibom’s growing strategic importance in the country’s security framework. He assured the Air Force of the state’s continued support.

“We are committed to supporting all federal security agencies because we believe that a safe and secure society is the foundation of any meaningful development,” the governor stated.

The new base is expected to strengthen existing security structures, aid in rapid deployment of air assets, and serve as a hub for broader military and economic coordination in the region.
