Kigali, Rwanda, Nigeria’s national women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, have cemented their dominance on the continent by winning their fifth consecutive FIBA Women’s AfroBasket title with a commanding 78-64 victory over Mali in the 2025 final.
The win, secured in Kigali on Saturday, marks Nigeria’s seventh overall AfroBasket crown and extends their unbeaten run in the tournament to 29 games, a flawless streak dating back to 2015. With this feat, D’Tigress become the first team in African basketball history, male or female, to clinch the continental title five times in a row.
In a tense contest, the defending champions edged Mali 61-56 at the end of the third quarter, before pulling away with a dominant 17-8 performance in the final stretch.
Head coach Rena Wakama, who made history in 2023 as the first woman to coach a team to an AfroBasket title, has now led the team to back-to-back championships, further solidifying her legacy.
Nigeria’s previous AfroBasket titles came in 2003, 2005, 2017, 2019, 2021, and 2023. With this latest triumph, D’Tigress maintain a perfect record over five consecutive tournaments and a decade of continental supremacy.
