Renowned lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) has condemned early political campaigns for the 2027 general elections, labeling them unlawful and a distraction from governance.
Speaking on a televised program on Tuesday, Falana stressed that the ongoing political activities violate Nigeria’s Electoral Act. He called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to warn politicians—including state governors—against premature electioneering.
“The current campaigns for the 2027 elections are completely illegal. They are also a diversion because Nigerians expect governance, not political distractions,” Falana said.
He emphasized that Nigerian law does not permit election campaigns two years before an election. “Our legal framework does not allow campaigns this far in advance. INEC must enforce the Electoral Act and ensure compliance,” he added.
Falana also urged the media to uphold the rule of law by holding politicians accountable. “If those in power wish to change the law to permit early campaigns, they should follow due process. Until then, the law must be respected,” he stated.
