Crystal Palace made history on Sunday, winning their first-ever Community Shield with a nail-biting 3-2 penalty shootout triumph over Liverpool at Wembley Stadium.
The FA Cup holders twice fought back from behind in regular time before holding their nerve in the spot-kick decider.
Liverpool struck first after just four minutes when new signing Hugo Ekitike marked his competitive debut with a goal, set up by fellow debutant Florian Wirtz. Palace hit back midway through the half, with Jean-Philippe Mateta calmly converting from the penalty spot after Virgil van Dijk fouled Ismaila Sarr.
The Reds regained the lead in bizarre fashion as Jeremie Frimpong’s looping cross sailed over Dean Henderson and nestled into the far corner. Palace, however, refused to fade. Sarr levelled the contest again in the second half, latching onto a superb pass from Adam Wharton to make it 2-2 and send the game to penalties.
In the shootout, Henderson emerged as the hero once more. The goalkeeper saved from Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott, while Mohamed Salah blazed his effort over. Despite Alisson Becker denying Eberechi Eze and Borna Sosa striking the bar, Oliver Glasner’s men kept their composure to seal a famous win.
For Liverpool, it was yet another Wembley disappointment, while Palace celebrated a moment that will be remembered as one of the greatest in the club’s history.
