A coalition of independent media practitioners, the Media Alliance for Good Governance and Development (MAGGD), has spoken out against what it describes as overblown reactions to a recent press engagement involving Abia State Governor Alex Otti in Umuahia.
In a statement, MAGGD stressed that the intense attention given to a minor exchange during the event has diverted public debate from critical issues affecting Nigerians, including rising unemployment, inflation, inadequate infrastructure, and security challenges.
The coalition noted that while questions raised during the session could have been managed differently, the scale of criticism—particularly from opposition figures and certain media outlets—was unjustified and counterproductive. MAGGD highlighted Governor Otti’s reputation for measured responses and encouraged journalists to prioritize reporting that addresses real societal challenges rather than fueling controversy.
Warning against the resurgence of sensationalist reporting, MAGGD emphasized that media should not be used as a tool for political point-scoring. The coalition argued that exaggerated coverage in the past has contributed to political tension and public mistrust, and it urged all stakeholders to adopt responsible journalism.
Looking ahead to the 2027 elections, MAGGD revealed plans to engage independent media practitioners nationwide to support initiatives that reflect the accomplishments and ongoing development in Abia State. The group also plans to reach out to voters, ensuring public information campaigns remain factual and legally compliant.
The coalition concluded that the focus of media coverage should be on issues that directly impact citizens’ lives, and called on journalists, political actors, and civil society to work together to strengthen governance and public accountability in Abia State.
