The Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA) has commenced the demolition of unauthorised residential buildings erected within the premises of the former Umuahia market, popularly known as Ogwumabiri, in line with the Abia State Government’s plan to transform the city into a modern, world-class capital.

In a statement signed by UCDA General Manager, Mr. Kingsley Agomoh, the property was originally allocated by the previous administration to a private investor for the construction of an Event Centre under a Build, Operate, and Transfer (BOT) arrangement. However, the investor allegedly diverted from the approved plan and began developing residential duplexes and apartments without government authorisation.

The statement noted that for the past year, the present administration had engaged the investor and even offered a negotiated ex-gratia settlement before reclaiming the site. The reclaimed land will now be repurposed for a modern integrated transportation hub, linking the city’s bus terminal, train station, and intercity shuttle services.

According to UCDA, the demolished structures were unsuitable for the government’s overriding public interest. The proposed transport hub is expected to ease traffic congestion, improve safety, create economic opportunities, and boost Umuahia’s infrastructure as part of the state’s broader urban renewal drive.

The Abia State Government reaffirmed its commitment to repositioning Umuahia into a vibrant, modern capital, describing the project as a major milestone in its development agenda.
