Photsaneng Residents March on Mine Over Jobs Dispute

Residents of Photsaneng village in Rustenburg, North West, have staged a protest at the Clover Alloy mining operation, demanding jobs and business opportunities for locals.

The mine, previously operated by Lanxess, has faced repeated disruptions in the past from community members calling for employment. Residents say they are surrounded by mining operations that have failed to uplift the community or improve living conditions.

Protesters handed over a memorandum to Clover Alloy, urging the company to honour its social and labour plans.

“What we need from Clover is for them to hire local youth and work with local businesses. If you look inside now, there are no young people working as permanent staff. They only hired people from outside,” said community member Tiny Mohale.

Photsaneng Business Forum representative Omphemetse Komane echoed the frustration, saying most machinery operators at the mine are brought in from outside the village or even the province. “We are a frustrated business forum, and we need answers,” Komane said.
