The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development have resolved to set up a national task force to recover encroached federal lands and safeguard government properties across the country.
The agreement was reached during a high-level meeting at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, where Housing and Urban Development Minister, Ahmed Dangiwa, alongside the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Shuaib Belgore, unveiled the initiative.
Dangiwa explained that the move was in line with President Bola Tinubu’s directive to implement a housing programme aimed at delivering thousands of housing units to police officers nationwide. He noted that the scheme would also help tackle the rising cases of land encroachment that have hindered or stalled several government projects.
According to him, protecting federal lands and improving the welfare of security personnel through housing are vital for national stability.
In his response, IGP Egbetokun welcomed the plan, stressing that welfare directly impacts the operational effectiveness of police officers. He described affordable housing as a key component of police welfare and pledged the force’s full commitment to the task force.
“Recovering encroached lands is a matter of urgent national priority,” he stated, assuring that the collaboration with the Housing Ministry would promote both national development and the welfare of police officers.
Force Spokesperson, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, in a statement, reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to professionalism, excellence, and service to the nation, while prioritising the well-being of its personnel.
