The Anambra State House of Assembly has suspended Bernard Udemezue, member representing Ayamelum Constituency, for three months without pay over alleged “unparliamentary conduct, inciting social media comments, and abuse of legislative privileges.”
The suspension, announced on Tuesday by the House Committee on Rules, Business, Ethics, and Privileges, followed Udemezue’s social media posts alleging marginalisation of his constituency in the disbursement of constituency allowances.
The committee’s report, signed by Chairman Ofodeme Ikenna and 10 members, accused the lawmaker of snubbing invitations to clarify his claims, instead mocking the process by circulating the summons on WhatsApp with a song.
It also cited petitions against him, including intimidation of colleagues, unlawful interference, and misconduct while serving as Chairman of the Committee on Homeland and Boundary Affairs.
The House ruled that Udemezue must tender a public apology to the Speaker and members both in writing and via social media, and undergo compulsory training on parliamentary ethics. He is barred from the Assembly Complex for the duration of his suspension.
Reacting, Udemezue insisted he was being victimised for exposing corruption, alleging that lawmakers receive N10 million quarterly for constituency projects. Ayamelum youths have also condemned the suspension, vowing resistance.
Meanwhile, the Assembly urged the Anambra State Police Commissioner and the DSS to investigate Udemezue’s allegations, including claims of political plots and the murder of the late Justice Azuka.
“The actions of Bernard Udemezue have dented the image of the legislature. This House cannot condone behaviours that undermine our collective integrity,” the committee stated.
