Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State on Saturday personally intervened to rescue victims of a fatal road accident along the Benin Auchi Highway, shortly after the bypass.
The governor, who was on his way to Irrua in Esan Central Local Government Area, met a gridlock at the accident scene and immediately alighted from his vehicle to assess the situation.
According to eyewitnesses, the crash occurred when the driver of a white Toyota Venza, with registration number ABUJA GWA 50 AW, drove against traffic and collided with three fully loaded commercial minibuses. The impact left many passengers injured and caused a major traffic jam.
On arrival, Governor Okpebholo found several victims in critical condition, some bleeding heavily, while bystanders merely recorded videos. He immediately ordered two of his security Hilux vehicles to be converted into emergency transport vehicles. Under his supervision, the injured, including a woman with severe wounds, were evacuated and rushed to hospital for urgent medical care.
The governor remained at the scene until he confirmed that all victims had been safely conveyed to hospital, escorted by another security vehicle, before continuing his trip.
“Before the governor arrived, people were only taking pictures and videos. But he took charge and ensured the victims were rescued. This is the kind of leader we need one who leads with compassion and action,” an eyewitness said.
